Tennessee Trout Stocking
Each year about 75 streams and small lakes are stocked to provide a trout fishery. These streams have low abundance of wild trout, or no trout at all. Each year we stock about 325,000 9-12 inch trout between March and July. While trout fishing is allowed year-round on most of these streams, many of these waters are too warm for trout by mid summer. For this reason we limit most of the trout stocking to the spring and the best fishing is from the first stocking week until the midsummer when water temperatures exceed 70 degrees F.

What's Wild? Stocked and wild trout in PA
As you know, the Commission stocks fish across the state to provide a variety of fishing opportunities. These fish are grown in our hatcheries. Then we stock them so you can catch them. We stock nearly 5,000 stream miles with trout that you can catch and keep. We call these trout "catchable" because they are at least 7 inches long. That's the minimum size for trout. But there are parts of some trout streams that we don't stock. These waters are still great places to fish.
