Removing the Y-Bones from Pike
A row of bones shaped more or less like the letter Y lying along a northern pike’s spinal column is sometimes the bane of anglers and diners alike. But once the “Y-bones” are removed, northern pike become a table fish equal even to the heralded walleye.
The Y-bones lie in the mass of muscles on each side and above the spinal column. One arm of each Y-bone is attached by a ligament to one of the neural spines that form the familiar row of slender bones sticking up from the vertebrae. The other arm of the Y extends upward toward the fish’s back, and the fork and the base of the Y hang down.
